متن کاملAnatomy of a bathtub vortex.
We present experiments and theory for the "bathtub vortex," which forms when a fluid drains out of a rotating cylindrical container through a small drain hole. The fast down-flow is found to be confined to a narrow and rapidly rotating "drainpipe" from the free surface down to the drain hole. Surrounding this drainpipe is a region with slow upward flow generated by the Ekman layer at the bottom...
متن کاملInduced Particle Sloshing in a Rotating Container
Vibration absorbers are employed for both structural safety and comfort reasons. This paper explores a novel absorber which uses the sloshing of granular particles to dissipate energy in a rolling container. Some of the parameters which affect energy dissipation have been experimentally studied. Detailed description of one experiment is given. Further work involves numerical exploration.
متن کاملRotating vortex dipoles in ferromagnets.
Vortex-antivortex pairs are spontaneously created in magnetic elements. In the case of opposite vortex polarities the pair has a nonzero topological charge, and it behaves as a rotating vortex dipole. We find theoretically and confirm numerically its energy as a function of angular momentum and the associated rotation frequencies. The annihilation process of the pair changes the topological cha...
متن کاملNumerical study of a rotating fluid in a spheroidal container
The motion of an incompressible, viscous rotating fluid contained in a spheroidal container is studied by a direct numerical simulation in an oblate spheroidal coordinate system. An appropriate formalism is first derived which allows us to expand any scalar field in spherical harmonics and to decompose any vector field into its sphero-poloidal and sphero-toroidal scalar parts. The spinover mode...
